Our Weekend in Virtual Reality

A Response to Senator Mike Lee's Proposal to Redefine Obscenity
In May, 2025, we responded to Senator Mike Lee’s “porn ban” proposal by reading the bill aloud while having sex. (Check out the video on reddit or PornHub!) The following statement was our full response to reporter Sam Cole when she asked about our decision to make the video, and we decided to share it here: We think Senator Mike Lee’s proposed bill, The Interstate Obscenity Definition Act, is deeply misguided and ethically wrong. The effect Lee’s bill would have on porn producers and consumers is obvious, but it’s the greater implications that scare us most. This bill would hurt every American by infringing on their freedoms and putting power into the hands of politicians. We don’t want this government—or any well-meaning government in the future—to have the ability to find broader and broader definitions of “obscene.” Today they use the word to define porn. Tomorrow it could define the actions of peaceful protestors. Lee is a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, aka Mormons (a background shared by Diana). There’s little doubt that his bill is motivated by his religion, as Mormons believe that sex is a private, sacred act that should only be shared between a husband and wife (and wife and wife and wife if we’re getting fundamentalist). Like many religious people in power, Lee and his proponents feel they have the responsibility to fight evil by controlling the world around them. (Ironically, this bill actually contradicts the church’s stance on human agency, as you can see in this church-sanctioned article. Even as creators ourselves, we know there are plenty of reasons to be critical of the porn industry given its long history of ethical violations. Pornography can become a problem when it becomes compulsory, or begins distorting views of sex, body image, or relationships. Similar to Lee, our beliefs have motivated us to take action. But unlike Lee, what we do does not impede the freedom of others. Instead, we try to give agency back to our fans by providing a happy, healthy alternative to mainstream porn. We did all that before AI, and we won’t start using it now : ) • Medium-Format Photography We recently dropped a series of film photographs we’ve been taking on our vacations. Again, basic editing tools will be used for touch-ups, but never anything more. We also want to make it clear that we are not actually anti-AI! We’re both intrigued by the potential good AI can bring to the world, while simultaneously being cautious about the risks. In our personal lives, we used Claude Opus to read Diana’s entire genome and it has given us an understanding of her health issues that brought us both to tears. While we have plenty of skepticism, we will not deny its usefulness. These are the places where AI has shown up in our content: • Diana’s Photo Sets We only recently realized that some of the simple tools we use to touch up our pics use AI-assisted editing. Diana has talked several times about how our videos are 100% authentic, but our photos are filled with all kinds of staged artifice like makeup, costumes, filters, and blemish removal in post. We’ve even shared a couple “before and after” comparisons to show the difference. Nobody has ever asked or complained, but we just want to be clear that this artifice technically includes assistance from older versions of AI. • Website Imagery If you clicked around our old website, you saw several "animated" pictures of us together. These were all normal photos edited with a phone app that claimed to use AI. This was about four years ago, and while we don't regret playing around in the early stages of photo generation, we only have one image on the current iteration of our site, and have no plans to add any in the future. • Behind the Scenes Damien has used Claude Fable to help automate the creation of our Soft Archive chapters, as well as the newest versions of our websites. This is our favorite use of AI, and what we consider the most defensible. Two years ago, this site would have taken resources that only the big porn companies could afford. Now Damien can sit at home in his boxers and meet the same challenges for only $20 a month. We consider this to be a huge win for small businesses of all kinds, as well as individuals with big dreams. So far, that is the full extent of how we’ve interacted with this new technology, and we'll continue to be transparent about its use in our work. We know there's nothing we can do to stop AI-generated performers from becoming more and more prevalent in porn. What we *can* do is commit to being a human, AI-free alternative. TRANSLATION FROM FRENCH TO ENGLISH Regarding adult content, the narrative has always been that it is violent and degrading to women; however, I tended to watch videos featuring cute couples making love, so that didn't really align with what I’d heard. That said, I certainly agree that the content follows certain conventions and doesn't depict truly egalitarian encounters—adult films are shaped by gender representations that reflect our society. But to really discuss this, we need to start by actually watching the material. So, today I’d like to analyze a short video that I think highlights several nuances. The video I’ve chosen is titled "Texting Pretty Girls"; it’s from the "Diana & Damien" channel—a couple of creators who have been active since 2021. The video opens with Diana holding a drink in a nightclub. She then leaves, and the couple reappears in an underground parking garage inside their car. Diana, seemingly drunk, is watching Damien place the camera inside the car. He doesn't look at her, nor mention her, which might suggest a lack of trust. The video has an amateur, almost hidden camera aesthetic, reinforcing the impression of authenticity. A long, nearly ten-minute discussion ensues about a girl Diana says she flirted with earlier that evening. The conversation drifts to their views on fidelity, their desires, and the urge to see this young woman again for a threesome. She suggests to Damien that they make love in the back of the car, then returns to the topic of bisexuality, eventually talking less and less and texting her. Damien encourages her and then begins to touch her as she continues using her phone. Only after a few more minutes of playful sexual interaction does Damien ask, "Yeah, if you're up for it?" and she enthusiastically confirms, saying, "Totally." From that point on, she moves to the back seat, and the camera is clearly part of their game—not hidden from Diana, who shows herself off before moving on to the penetration sequence. There is a lot to say about this video; for starters, there’s the way the intimate conversation is presented to the audience as a form of foreplay spanning 25 minutes. Almost half the video consists of a casual, laid-back chat in the car—a conversation touching on open relationships and female bisexuality. While this isn't exactly the most conservative relationship model, it aligns perfectly with pornographic tropes, where bisexuality is a recurring theme and part of an ideal—that liberated, adventurous feminine quality, and so on—followed by the sexual act itself of the woman and penetration—so we aren't strictly following the classic amateur-style script—yet passion remains central. There is also a clear focus on the woman's body; her genitals are filmed in close-up, unlike her partner's. Then there is the rather ambiguous issue of consent: the female partner expresses her consent very explicitly—something quite rare in both studio-produced porn and amateur couple-made content. At the same time, however, Diana’s enthusiastic consent must be viewed in light of her intoxication and, crucially, the fact that she consents to the sexual act itself but not to being filmed. I must clarify here that I am speaking about the *representation*—what we see in the footage—rather than how it was actually produced; we must remember that these are professional creators. Consent might well have been given off-camera—we simply don't know. To sum up: with this vlog-style approach—starting with the nightclub scene, the conversation, and so on—the sexual encounter is framed within the context of real life, specifically marital sex. Yet, it still adheres to the conventions of the genre: consent is expressed (though not at every single moment), and the practices are "vanilla"—nothing spectacular, hardcore, or violent (though "violent" is a term that would need defining—a topic for a future YouTube video), but it works for us. The practice remains complex regarding norms. In short, the point I wanted to make is that adult content—which encompasses diverse and ambivalent representations—cannot simply be reduced to being either violent or feminist; instead, it requires a more detailed analysis to examine the norms it perpetuates or subverts. That is how I began studying adult films. DIANA'S REPLY Oh wow, this is such a thoughtful and insightful video! This is the kind of close reading we hoped the work would get.
